bed, or on deck. At 10 there is a serious break- fast, when you have your choice of 14 or 16 dishes, some hot, with potatoes, and “tea water’’or beer, with a taste of the national strong waters if you feel so disposed After this substantial meal, we can very well subsist until 3 o’clock dinner, a meal of five heavy courses which lasts about an hour, followed by more coffee and rusks ; then, at 7 p.m., if happily you have any appetite left, fifteen more dishes appear The chief peculiarities of our bill of fare were red-smoked salmon, raw goose, sweet soups with an undue proportion of wine, and raisins floating in them, black stale rye-bread, and often beef-steak fried with that bulb, Don Quixote denounced as pertaining to scullions and low fellows—onions. They are a series of steep, oblong, conical hills in parallel ranges, rising from the sea and sloping shorewards in a succession of step.like terraces, covered with a thin stratum of earth, sometimes no more than eight inches in depth, which produces grass, with stone hedgings generally showing near the water a sheer precipice of dark rock from 20 to 3000 feet high Narrow channels with powerful currents separate them from each other, and frequent fjords run far into the land. For two days we steamed in and out among these islands, sat in comfortable chairs, or lounging idly over the bulwarks, watching an ever-changing panorama of colossal pictures WTe were told of the long winter, when terrible tempests sweep over the cliffs, when the wind whistles, the
