Shall we take them one by one in detail, the sixty of them, risking the quicksands, and their ever-changing courses, or cross to the eastern bank of the main stream, oamp at the oasis of Eyvindarkofaver, where plenty of coarse grass abounds, .and then recross the stream to-morrow, at a great ford where it shallows out, after having gathered all these tributaries to itself? The guide must decide, for much will depend upon the weather, and the then condition of •the streams themselves. Both alternatives are chosen ; perhaps, if anything, the southerners prefer the eastern route, while their northern friends accept the streams, and camp beneath Arnarfell. To either spot will take twelve ;hours from Kithagil. ‘ On reaching the hill,’ says Dr. Foster, ‘ we caught sight of gome swans and cygnets, and tired as we were, the instincts of the .chase were too strong, so we rode up the hillside, as far as we could, and .then dismounting, ran after the cygnets, and knocked over one or two with ,our riding-whips, and made a meal of them later on.’ The next day’s march will end at one of the streams from the Blue 'Peak Glacier, the Hof’s most southerly outlier, just underneath the feet of which are the springs of the central sulphur vents. The fourth day will give us basalt gorges on our right with waterfalls, and as we sink from seventeen hundred feet or so above sea-level to a thousand, we shall encounter lava streams again, and pumice-beds, till we find ourselves entangled in a maze of little willow scrub, as Hekla heaves in sight. The first farm is found at Skrithufellsskdgr, but Hagi, an hour lower down, offers better quarters. Here we may join the western routes, or those which lead to Burnt 'Njal’s land. But we have wandered far from Husavfk, where our steamer stayed put an hour or two, and then with her bows turned northward for the last jtime, carried us beyond the Arctic Circle, past Rifstangi and back again, to toss ’mid the war of the sea waves, out in the Thistlefirth. And then there rose before us its wonderful eastern horn, ‘ the upright wall of Langanes,’ a flat-topped ridge, two leagues in length, and two hundred feet in height, but scarce a mile across. Ruthless and cold are its towering sides, and more pitiless still they seemed when our captain told of an English ship which struck at the base. Her crew reached a narrow ledge before she broke up, but there they stayed, for not even a sailor could scale that cliff, and there they died, with the seagulls’ scream for a requiem. As we -rounded the point, far out, its southern face appeared, lashed by the sweep .of the waves, which angrily broke on a scree at its foot, and flung .themselves half-way up to its crest. Yet. out at sea, there rode like birds .on those waveg the smacks of a Grimsby fishing-fleet, the earliest heralds of 4the homeland.
