Day-care Good day-care centres are a positive choice all children should have, and they are a necessity to parents working outside the home. The care of children is one of the most important projects of any nation, but regrettably the day-care situation can best be described as being in a state of emergency. Centres are too few, allocations to this area have been decreasing and the salaries of trained nursery teachers are shamefully low. More day-care centres must be built quickly, simply and safely. Appropriate housing must be bought or rented for centres. In the centres, we must have effi- cient child-rearing by registered nursery school teachers. Their salaries must be raised to attract more staff to the profession, and salaries must reflect the great re- sponsibility entailed in raising new members of society. Day-care must be available regardless of location, job status, financial status and marital status of the parents. The Women's Alliance wants: 9 parents to have an option of shorter working days and flexible work- ing hours so as to give families more time together, 9 the salaries of nursery school teachers to be raised significantly with respect to the importance of their work, 9 increased emphasis to be put on building up day-care centres, 9 strict demands be made of day-care people who take children into their homes, 9 to increase the cooperation between parents and day-care centres. 11
