Agriculture Icelandic agriculture stands at a crossroads. Ag- ricultural policy has been dominated by improvi- dence and short-sightedness. For years, farmers have been encouraged to increase production and to construct new buildings. Now we are faced with overproduction and an excess of farmers with re- gard to the market's requirements. The govern- ment and agricultural leaders have sought solu- tions without precautions or foresight. The rural areas are therefore faced with a greater population reduction and devolution than ever before. The government provides compensation for non-pro- duction in a way which leads to a disorganised re- duction in the number of farmers without fully considering the effects on the land and its value. The social situation and culture of the rural areas are endangered and the financial status of farmers declining. Diminishing production results in a decline of employment which in turn leads to a greater number of people fleeing the rural areas. The Women's Alliance places emphasis on keeping the rural areas populated. We must also produce our own food as much as possible. To accomplish this task, there is a need for organized and planned agriculture which takes into account our hature, its value and uses, and creates a good life for people in rural areas. We have to endow future generations with a better land. To make this possible, the whole population in both urban and rural areas, must work together for the be- nefit of the nation as a whole. 24
