One or two of the church and harbour of Reykjavik, the Allemannegya, the Big Geyser erupting, the Bruara Bridge, and a few others constituted the stock. The lens with which they had been taken was evidently an inferior one, and so they all had the indistinct appear- ance of being badly focussed. However, we all bought a few to encourage trade. The silver was mostly of the usual kind, filagree work, made up into little buttons and pendants and belts. It is exactly of the same character as the Norwegian work, and there is little doubt but that nearly all the Icelandic silver has been brought from Norway at some time or other. Most of the modern silver, and one or two bits that looked ancient, were picked up ; and then we scattered over the town to buy odds and ends. Some went to Tomsen’s and some to Schmidt’s. They were genuine “ stores ” of the tenpenny nail to an anchor character. This was the great time for the natives from the interior to come in to the capital and make their purchases for the year. So Schmidt and Tomsen and half a dozen other places were driving a tremendous trade. Ice- landers—men and women—were jostling each other about, turning over pieces of calico, inspecting oilskins, or cheapening boots and hats in all directions. The women all had their heads adorned with the curious cloth bell-pull affairs which do duty for bonnets. They wore sad-coloured coarse stuff gowns, and were of one thickness from the shoulders to the hips. The men were chiefly noticeable for rough jackets, canvas -trousers, huge woollen comforters, and their floppy
