Madame Finsen came in and greeted us warmly, and we sat and chatted a while. Young Finsen was with us, a well-grown lad of sixteen, who had learnt as much as he could at Reykjavik, and was going next year to Copenhagen University. He looked the very type of a German student. Round healthy face, with a downy yellow moustache just budding, eyeglasses suspended by a long cord, low- necked shirt with a broad collar and plenty of front black necktie with expanded ends, a short, black, cut- away coat, and the usual young man’s difficulty in disposing of his hands and feet. He was a shrewd lad, and knew more French than ninety-nine out of a hundred English public schoolboys, albeit the Reyk- javikian Rugby had been his only alma mater. Presently the Governor takes Mrs George Holt and Mr Alfred offers his arm to Madame, and we sail in to lunch, passing through the drawing-room to the dining-room beyond. All the four rooms lay en suite, as is so common in German and Norwegian houses of the better class. We passed in the drawing-room the two little girls who were with us at dinner the previous day, and standing with them was a very pretty fair-haired young lady, evidently their governess. They came with us into the dining-room. We sat round a long oval table, and, with the family, we were fifteen. Our host and hostess did not sit at the ends but took the middle seats at each side. In the centre of the table was an epergne filled with cakes like puff-balls, and all round were cold dishes of various kinds with decanters of wine. Alto-
