20 A TRIP IN THE “ARGO." and were delighted to meet the old gentleman again, so they straightway accepted his invitation to smoke a cigar with him in the evening, and tell him any doctors’ gossip from England. The rest of the afternoon was spent in a stroll to some hot springs about two miles out of the town. We straggled along by the bouldery sea shore, and then over some very lumpy ground till a faint vapour of steam guided us to their position. We did not reach the high- est spring, but struck a little brook of hot water which arose from it and wandered away down for about half a mile till it reached the sea. For a considerable part of its course the brook was augmented by little springs which opened into its bed. Every now and then, under a bit of sloping bank or in the midst of a gravelly reach, you might see a bubbling, and there boiling water was evidently coming out of the ground, but there was no very definite hole to be seen. Nevertheless, up it came, and so hot that at these places one dare not touch it. After running a little way it soon became tepid, and was again warmed up by another bubbling place. Some women, who were washing clothes at a spot where the brook formed a little tepid rush, had wrapped their potatoes in a handker- chief, and were boiling them in a little spring that rose under the bank hard by. This was our first experience of cooking by strictly natural processes, and we were mightily amused with it, and would, like little boys, have “ paidled in the burn ” a long time had we not been aware that dinner awaited our return. The Bard and the Photographer went in the evening and paid their visit to Dr Hjaltelin. On their return, the Photogra- pher, elated by the brilliancy of the Doctor’s conver- sation (aided, it is believed, by some old brown brandy),
