34 A TRIP IN THE “ARGO. we saw the sunken collapsed valley, and could make out its opposite limit, the Raphnagya or Raven’s Crag. The Oxera River, flowing from the neighbouring hills, comes to the edge of the Allemannegya, and, pouring over it in a cascade, runs down at its foot to end in the Thingvalla Lake. Through a natural gap in the Alle- mannegya we descended into the valley, fording the Oxera on our way. On its opposite bank, almost under the shadow of the cliff, is a green grassy patch some acres in extent, with an elevated mound at one end of it. As the great lava-bed sank down it became split and cracked in all directions, and a very remark- able series of deep fissures, filled with water from the Oxera, surrounds this green spot and practically con- verts it into an island, encircled by a natural moat at every point but one. This verdant patch is where the Althing or Parliament met, and the mound is the Logberg or Hill of Laws, from which all announcements were made. The people encamped at the foot of the Allemannegya (whence its name) by the side of the Oxerd in tents or booths, and the Quarter Courts, as they were termed, were held on a flat piece of ground a little higher up. Just on the opposite side of the Oxera was the well-known little black church of Thingvalla, with the clergyman’s house hard by. But for the patches of verdure beside them, it was hard to tell them from the brown lava rocks around. In front was a little cemetery, with a stone and turf wall around it. But if anybody wants to get an idea of the physical features of the place, let him read Lord Dufferin’s description of it, deducting a fairish amount for the author’s native en- thusiasm. It is perfectly glowing. And if he wants to know what was done there in ancient days, let him
