At night the ladies, Mr Robert and Mr George Holt, and Mr Bateson occupied the sitting room and two bed- rooms of the clergyman’s house, and the rest of the males went religiously to church to sleep, as they had often done at home. There they went through their vespers, vigils, matins, primes, octaves, and quarter casks, and the other proper observances, and were duly re- freshed thereby. Next day (Saturday, July 3d) we returned to Reyk- javik. As we neared the metropolis we met numerous parties of natives, all travelling from the town. Many of them had been buying their stock of clothing and other necessaries for the year, and many were people from the sea-coast, who were on their way to the farms in the interior, where they would get employment in gathering in the hay crop. For this they would receive recompense in butter, or wool, or sheep ; money being but sparingly used for payments of this sort. In the winter time again the folk from the interior come down to the fishing stations on the coast and take to cod fish- ing. The people we met were all warmly and decently clad, and bore no appearance of poverty or distress. The men looked exactly like decent farm servants in the north of England. The women were all seated on big side-saddles, much resembling small easy chairs—some- thing like the things they put children into for donkey rides at New Brighton. When we got within a few miles of the town it became evident that it was Satur- day night, and that there had been a fair or something of that sort going on, as many of the men had evidently had a good suck at the rum bottle. Some of them, indeed, were helplessly drunk. One unfortunate wight made a polite attempt to doff his cap to our leading
