45 by bis orders, cne of the leaders which caused so much ill feeling and hatred between them and the people, that they, after killing all his retinue, and after having tied him in a sack, threw him into a river and consequently he was drowned. In the years 1459-1520, Olaf and Gottskalk, who were bishops residing at Holum, were known to be the most merciless and over- bearing bishops that Icelanders ever knew. Olaf, for little or no reason, excommunicated one of the wealthiest farmers, who owned at that period 100 farms, and at the same time passed the same sen- tence on the pronouncing lawyer. Bishop Gottskalk became very much richer in lands and money than Olaf. He was a man capable of horrible atrocities, and was called ‘Gottskalk the merciless.’ One of his worst acts was the persecution of a farmer named Jon Sigmundson, a very rich man, whom he contended had married his fourth cousin, but Jon brought sufficient evidence to prove that this was an untruth and proved his innocence of the charge before the people. But notwithstanding all this the bishop confiscated all his property and wealth. The Icelanders were so incensed at this that they combined and agreed to see that not only their rights should be respected but banded to- gether to defend their property against the clerical powers. This event happened in the year 1513. Indulgences and Protestants. I11 the year 1517 a cardinal, sent out by Pope Leo 10th, ar- rived in Iceland, he having been commissioned to collect all the money he could for the purpose of raising funds for the building of the cathedral of St. Peter, at Rome, which is now the most magnifi- cent and stately building erected in the world and many millions of dollars have been spent in beautifying the edifice exteriorly and in its interior. He was commissioned to sell indulegnces, granting a remission of certain sins committed by members of the Catholic faith, also promising thereby to grant a lessening of punishment in the future state. The bishop of Skalholt, Stefan Jonson, in speaking fo his congregation, persuaded then) not to buy these indulgences,
