72 ever since ‘The vaporous famine. In one year, 1783 to 1784, 11,- 000 cows, 27,000 horses and 186,000 sheep died from its effects, or four-fifths of the entire number of sheep on the island, and na- turally when the domestic animals starved and died, the people could subsist but a short time longer and consequently during the year 1784 and 1785 more than 9,000 of the people succumbed, most of them dying from starvation. In the south part of the island in 1784, an earthquake took place and many people thought the island would be altogether destroyed. In 1785 a committee was appointed in Copenhagen to inspect and find out exactly the state of affairs and the circumstances the people were in and also to endeavor to find some means by which they could improve the condition of the people and it was decided to remove the bishop's headquarters and also the school to Reyk- javik because nearly all the buildings had been destroyed in the earth- quake. The school was accordingly removed and the real estate sold. But the bishops, Finnur Jonson and Hannes Finnscn were by their own desire, allowed to remain there as long as they lived. The committee discussed very seriously removing all the Iceland- ers to Denmark and decided to give the Danish merchants the com- mercial rights free. In the year 1788 Jon Eirikson was one of the committee, but he had labored so hard, more especially with literary work, that it af- fected his health. He was the head librarian for the king, and had put the library into perfect order and conveniently arranged it. He was very much dissatisfied with the doings of the committee, of which he was a member, and strenuously opposed the moving of the seat of the bishop and the school from Skalholt to Reykjavik and pro- tested against the selling of the real estate. He also endeavored to force the merchants to reside in Iceland, when they had received the free gift of the right of trade, but he was over-ruled and so the mat- ter became law.
