The king therefore sent over a book, which was called ‘Ironside,’ because it was the usage in olden times to bind books in Iron. This book of rules and laws was accepted by Althing. The book was small but perfect, the old code being discarded. The administration was changed and in place of their having the pronouncing lawyer at their head. A lawyer, by name of Sturla Thordarson, the famous his- torical writer, of whom we have already heard, was the first to rule over Althing. At a later date two lawyers were appointed, one for eastern and southern quarters and one for the northern and western quarters. The rule of the ancient leaders was then abolished, and men called the ‘King’s Bailiffs’ governed the land. The most of the rules of the quarter courts and the grand jury were abolished and all matters of law were decided by a committee of 36, who were appointed as a judicial committee. This code, however, proved unsatisfactory, both to the king and to the Icelandic population, and as he wrote another for the special government of Iceland and called it Jons’ Book, he sent it by one Jons King, together with a man by the name of Lodin, as a king’s commissioner. But after having heard the contents of this new law book they found they could not agree to accept the law as a whole. But the king’s com- missioner in speaking before Althing, said that he thought the peo- ple had great presumption in endeavoring to make their own laws when they were already subservient to the king and he alone was fit to make laws for them. But they in reply said that they could not approve of the work, as a whole, as it would cause them to lose their liberty altogether. However, after a long discussion they agreed to approve of the new laws in part. This agreement was made at Althing in 1821, and was for many years the accepted ruling for all judicial and national affairs and some of the rulings and laws were in force today. During the years that the book was in force foreign power oyer Iceland was much increased, the king having to accept laws made at Althing. But Althing had also to accept laws made by the king.
