47 The bishop cf Skalholt, who was an aged man and was becom- ing almost blind, desired that Gissur should be appointed to succeed him, who, when he was in Denmark, (to which country he had to go to be ordained) promised the king to become a convert to the new religion and follow its tenets and on his arrival in Iceland took his seat at Althing as a bishop. But in the same year he had al- ready made a promise to rule the churches according to the old re- gime. However, on his taking his seat he endeavored to introduce the new laws in relation to clerical matters at Althing. But the bishop of Holum, Jon Arason, refused to have anything to do with it. During the time that Gissur was in Denmark a man, by the name of Didrik, who held a government commission, was killed at Skalholt, owing to the fact that on Whitsunday, of 1540, he had driven all the people out cf the monastery at Videy. But the Abb6, or head man at Skalholt, caused him to be executed. The vice- governor, who was ruling during the absence of the governor, how- ever, thought that the bishop was in some way or other responsible for this act cf Dridrik’s. On the king hearing of this matter, he also turned against the bishop and issued credentials accusing the bishop of the fact, which he dispatched to Iceland, to be brought up in Althing. But the people having duly considered the matter dismissed the accusation. The newly appointed Bishop Gissur in endeavoring to introduce the new religious ideas, promulgated by the reformation, into his district, consisting of the omission of some of the old forms and the method of performing divine service, hearing that the old bishop whose see he had taken over desired in conjunction with the then bishop of Holum, to fight against the introduction of these new doc- trines, took the necessary steps to stop this interference with his ideas and the matter was allowed to go on and as far as can be as- certained, Bishop Gissur was the cause of the Danish governor, by the name of Christofer Ilvitfeld, coming over to Iceland in the year 1546, with two war vessels to arrest the old bishop Ogmund, >vho was nearly blind, confiscating all his property.
