63 Iceland and while employed in the business of the king, he collected as many documents and manuscripts as he possibly could and he continued to do so as long as he lived. Unfortunately some of his collection was burned, including a few of his own manuscripts, but he was luckily enabled to save the greater part from destruction. He was also the means of preventing many extremely valuable manuscripts from being taken away by foreigners, which would have been but for his interefence consequently lost to the nation. Before he died he made a will in which he deeded all his proper- ty, works and manuscripts to the Danish university, with the ex- press understanding that they were to be used for the aid of Ice- landic students in studying the history of their country, the folklore, poetry and the laws ancient and modern. Bishop Jon Viddalin. Bishop Jon Viddalin held the office of bishop at Skalholt frcin the year 1698 till 1720. He was a very intelligent and intellectual man and an eloquent speaker; he was most noted for having written a book of sermons for the use of families, which was used for many years in home services throughout the country. In fact, it was not until Bishop Peterson wrote a book of family worship, which he had printed in the year 1856 that the use of the other was discontinued, the latter work being more up-to-date and very much plainer in its wording. Bishop Jon Vidallin was of a domineering disposition, but at the time he lived, the leaders were continually disputing, many of whom were bullying and aggressive men. A certain lawyer by the name of Odd Sigurdson, who was very popular, was responsible for many of the law-suits, as a great many of the men at that time were given to debauchery and drink. Sad to say the bishop used to drink considerably himself. But a few years later a bishop by the name of Jon Arason, took the see in charge and made great changes amongst the clergy, and by turning out of office those that were the worst drunkards, the improved the status of the church. He held office from the year 1722—1743.
