In the year 1771, he was appointed to an office under the government of Icelandic legisla- tion, and also did considerable work in connection with both Danish and Norwegian affairs. Owing to his energy, intelligence, fore- thought and pleasant manners to everyone, he was two years later promoted and became one of the high officials connected with Ice- landic affairs. From the year 1773 until the year 1787 the Danish government used more energetic measures and took a greater in- terest in Icelandic affairs than ever before or since. Jon Eirikson was full of patriotic enthusiasm for his native land and did his utmost to further the betterment of Iceland’s financial condition by obtaining better regulations and having everything done he could, to help to increase the raising of produce and other industrial employments that would be beneficial to the Icelanders. He found it extremely hard to advance, at any but a slow rate, owing to the many difficul- ties that come up from time to time, for instance in the year 1761 hoping to improve the stock and quality of the sheep and wool. They imported from Spain a new breed, but unfortunately by the rascality of the traders, they were found to be infected with a disease called ‘scab,’ which spread at such a fearful rate over the whole of the flocks that it became an epidemic and the people were unable to combat the pest and only succeeded in checking it by killing all the weak and suspected sheep, which were slaughtered by command of the king and even after that the ‘scab’ destroyed many for some time. In the year 1779 occurred one of the most appalling incidents in our history. This was the eruption of a volcano and was the most destructive that we have ever heard of in the history of our country, in fact since the first settling. This occurred in the eastern part of the island and broke out in several places. It first was noticed in the summer of 1783 and lasted until the middle of the winter of the following year. The grass was compeletely destroyed; the atmos- phere became dense and full of nauseous vapors, being like a heavy cloud all over the land the whole time and this has been called
