The people of Reykjavik are very susceptible to their environment, and take great delight in the mountain Esja when it displays its colours on clear sunshine days. The town’s flower-gardens clearly demonstrate their love of flowers and care for their surroundings. They take much pleasure in social gatherings, and no entertainment or funeral is ever neglected by them. In the evenings the young folk of the town meet in Austurstraeti and promenade backwards and forwards over a stretch of about a hundred yards. This is called to „runta“ in the language of Reykjavik, and as often as not is the prelude to an application for a marriage licence!
