176 APPENDIX. threw earth and stones high in the air, and their tails stood out nearly straight: both ran forward so fast that the sand was raised and whizzed past, and so rapid were the hoof- beats that one could hear but a single thud as the horses rushed forward on their way, fleeter than birds on the wing. And this equal contest of the horses did not last only for a moment. Sorli began to fall behind Storm, while Storm raced steadily and closely, with the same unabated energy. But when Sorli finds that Storm has the road, he braces himself up to the race and springs forward, with a bound so sudden and powerful that his owner has much ado to stick to him. At this moment Sira Thorgrim checks the course of Storm, being somewhat weary of it when Sorli bounded for- ward; and now at length Athalstane draws rein also, and brings Sorli to a stop. Then, as the spurt is at an end, both dismount, to let the horses breathe ; and then Sira Thorgrim says to Athalstane : “ I hardly expected that, and if Sorli is well done by, he will become the'one only horse in the district that I would allow to compete with Storm.” Then he added : “ Thou hast managed him fairly well. I see thou art become a good rider.” He said no more about that, but Athalstane thought to himself: “ That is what Jon at Skalholt saw; it was to be expected when he was pleased with the colt.” When Sira Thorgrim and his companion had reached the nearest part of the farm road to Myri, they saw a great collection of dogs, and a crowd in the churchyard, and sur- mised therefrom that the church-people must have arrived. But they saw no horses, and “the riding ponies,” said Sira Thorgrim, “ have likely been put in the enclosure at the north of the farm, and are not wanting, though we don’t see them.” They ride now till they come to the courtyard, and there
