What remains of art from the seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries is mostly minor art, or folk art, with a few interesting por- traits painted in oil. Carving in wood and bone was extremely popular and seems to have been the most vital means of expressing the artistic bent of the people of Iceland in those days. Everything was carved, even utensils for daily use. Silverwork was of high quality and always in demand for the Ice- landic women’s national costume, which is richly decorated with silver ornaments.
