48 During the summer of the same year the Althing approved of the introduction of Lutheranism, Bishop Jon being the only one not present, sending a letter, informing the assemblage that he only felt justified in obeying the king under the old covenant. Through the efforts of Gissur Lutheranism became popular in Skalholt with a few but not amongst the people and even the priests preferred to resign rather than embrace the new regime, although the bishops had started a school for the instruction of the clergy. Bishop Gissur died at the age of 40, in 1548. Bishop Jon Arason. Bishop Jon Arason was, if not the most, at least a very remark- able man in Iceland at this time. He was a skilful, ambitious, fana- tical, energetic and an excellent leader of the old style. He wrote a few poems which were considered fairly good, but he was not a highly educated man. After he had become a priest, he, like many other priests at this period, took a concubine into his home, with whom lie lived and by whom he had six children. In the early days this was often done, as the law forbade them to marry. One of the best things he did was to introduce into Iceland a printing press which he caused to be sent to the town of Holum in 1524- Bishop Jon was a firm believer in the Roman Catholic religion and used his utmost efforts to prevent the introduction of Lutheran- ism into his diocese. After the death of Bishop Gissur he endeav- ored to gain command of the bishopric of Skalholt. But a Revd. John Bjarnson, who was a Lutheran, defended his position, so for the present Bishop Jon could do no more. During the year 1549 Bishop Jon was ordered to go to Denmark to meet the king, but the bishop refused to, so he was ordered by the king on account of dis- obeying his command, to go into exile. The same summer however, he received a mandate from the Rope of Rome, to remain in Iceland, sending him his I,lies,sing and
