Both he and the bishop, Brynjolf, lived during the times when witchcraft spread over the land. But they were not only averse to it but did all they could to suppress it. Bishop Brynjolf was esteemed and honored by his country on account fo his erudition. He could see whether a man was clever or not and would assist him. . He took a fancy to and aided Hallgrim Peterson in his studies and finally ordained him as a priest. But after all, the beautiful inspirations of Hallgrim Petersen were as a light shining in the darkness and his hymns are considered the supreme ideal of all others the nation possesses. The Hereditary State. In all the years that Iceland was a dependency of Denmark, the kings were elected, but this statute was amended, when in the year 1660, the king of Denmark, Fredrick the Third, claimed the right of hereditary for his descendants and in the course of a few months was proclaimed ‘Monarch’ of Denmark, but still retained the title of king of Norway, as the right of hereditary was still in force there. But in the year 1661 Norway accepted the innovation and he was proclaimed Monarch of Norway and Denmark. In the year 1662 Henrik Bjelke, who was governor of Iceland, waited until the ses- sion of Althing was over and in order to more easily get the people to swear allegiance to the king, he summoned them to come to ‘Kopavogi,’ where the lands men swore allegiance to the king, but the question of monarchial rule was not mentioned. * After they had sworn to this He produced a letter or rather a document, which was written in Danish, and ordered the men to affix their marks or names to it. This document was for the purpose of authorizing the monarchial right of the king and his descendants over Iceland. There were very few of the people who understood the purpose of the government and when they were informed of the de- privation of their rights against the election of the king, they ob- jected to having their names enrolled. But Bjelke pleaded with
