scriptis lecta, sive, quod verosimilius, e sermone cognita tam
arcte secutus est, ut non alius et differens, sed idem ipse
Islandus vocari mereatur.

Contra Dani duos scriptores producunt, aequales et con-
suetudine usuque familiari inter se conjunctissimos, qui uter-
que in eodem Selandiae monasterio commorati pari studio,
sed impari scientia ac viribus liistori&m scribere Danorum ag-
gressi sunt. Máximam vitae partem XII seculo degebant,
scripta vero fortasse demum initio insequentis perfecerunt, ita
tamen, ut aliquot annis ante summum literarum Islandorum
florem vigerent, quibus alter pari copia fabularum carminum-
que ac pleniori narratione certe comparandus, doclrina et
erudilione longe praecedit.
Nam Saxo Lange, gente haud ignota oriundus propter
oralionem suam latinam et copia verborum et dictione per-
quam volubili atque expedita, nec minus elegantia quadam
insignem prae aliis medii recentiorisque aevi scriptoribus Gram-
matici cognomine lionoratur. Profecto sane tanta erat scien-
tia et exercitatione, ut carmina quoque vetusta narrationi
suae intertexta ín versus latinos transferret variis numeris ac
satis elegantes.
