EXTRAIT D’ORVARODDSSAGA. 101 yfir, ok sögðu þar eigi skorta féföug. NiT skulu þit, sagði Oddr, taka við byrlaranum ok geyma hann trúliga, fyri því at svá standa augu hans á land upp, sem honum þiki eigi svá illt með þeim Björmum, sem hann lætryfir; Oddr fór nú til haugs- ins, en þeir varðveita skipin, Guðmundr ok Sigurðr; þeir sitja við ok sælda silfrit, en byrlarinn sitr ( millum þeirra, [ok eigi finna þeir fyrr en hann hleypr á land upp, ok liafa þeir lians ekki meira1. þat er al segja frá þeim Oddi, at þeir koma til haugsins, þá mælti Oddr: nú skulu vér húa oss byrðir, liverr eptir sínu afli-, svá at vér megum fulla3 ferð fara. [þá lýsti, er þeir fóru frá liaug- inum; þeir fara þartil at birti, þá stíugr Oddr við fótum. því ferr þú eigi? sagði Ásmundr; ek sé4 mannfjölda mikinn koma fram úr mörkinni5, sagði Oddr. Hvat skal nú ráða taka? sagði Ásmundr; þeir sjá nú allir mannfjöldann. Eigi er þetta allvel á komit, sagði Oddr, fyri því at örvamæli mitt er at skipum niðri, en nú mun ek snúa aptr at mörk- inni, ok höggva mér kylfu eina með bastöxi6 þessi, er ek hefi í hendi, en þér skulut [fara fram7 í nes þat, sem gengr fram í ána; ok svá gjöra þeir, en erhann kemr aptr, heíirhann stóra kylfu8 í liendi. Hvat ætlar þú, sagði Ásmundr, at gegni um fjöl- menniþetta? get ek, sagði Oddr, at þeim Guðmundi muni lauss hafa orðit byrlarinn, ok hafi hann borit erendi vort til Bjarma9, fyri því at mér þótti sem honum þætti hér ekki svá illt, sem hann lél yfir, skulu vér nú fyikja liði voru yfir þvert nesit; drífr nú at þeim liðit, ok kennir Oddr þar byrlarann í ferðar broddi. Oddr kastar orðum á hann ok mælti: því stýrir þú nú svá liverft10? byrlarinn mælti: ek vilda at því hyggja, hvat yðr líkaði bezt. se bono successu usos ostendunt, ibique prædæ copiam non deesse demonstraut. Jam vos, inquit Oddus, pincernam recipite et diligenter custodite, ejus enim oculi ita sunt ad terram conversi, ut si ei commo- ratio apud Bjannos non tam mala videatur, quam simulat. Sic Oddus ad tumulum proficiscitur; illi, Gudmundus ac Sigurdus, uaves custodiunt; sedent in argento cribrando occupati, medio inter ulrumque sedente pincerna, neque animuni advertunt, prius quam hic in terram excurrit, nec amplius ejus facul- tatem habent. Sed revertamur ad Oddum ac socios; qui quum ad tumulum venerunt, tum.Oddus: jam sarcinas nobis, pro suarum quisque virium mensura, paremus, ita ut pleno gradu ire possimus. Prima jam luce a turnulo abscedunt; ire pergunt, donec illuxerat dies. Tum Oddus suppresso pede restitit; quidni pergis? inquit Asmundus; Oddus: magnam video hominum multitudinem e silva emergentem; Asmundus: quid jam capiendum consilii est? jam cuncti multitudinem hominum conspiciunt; incommo- dius hoc accidit, inquit Oddus, eö quod pbaretra mea infrá in navibus relicta est; nunc itaque in silvam redibo, et hac dolabra, quam manu teneo, clavam mihi cædam; vos autem in lingulam, quæ procurrit in amnem, procedite. Sic faciunt; ille reversus, magnam manu clavam gestavit. Quid putas, mquit Asmundus, quæ hujus multitudiuis advenlus causa sit? Arbitror, ait Oddus, pincernam manibus Gud- mundi ac socii elapsum cerliores fecisse Bjarmos de rebus nostris; nam videbatur mihi, mansionem hoc loco ei non tam displicere, quantum simulabat; jam aciem nostram per transversam lingulam iustruamus. Jam multitudo undique affluit; hic Oddus pincernam in primore acie agnoscit; quem verbis compellans: cur viam adeo diversam insistis? inquit; pincerna: volui observare, inquit, quid vobis optime placeret. 1) a [ en er minnst von er, bregðr byrlinn við, ok fleygir sér ftlbyrðis, ok leggsl þegar til lands; Guðmundr blcypr upp ok þriff eilt snærisspjót, ok skýtr eptir honum, þat kemr i kálfa byrlanum, ok skilr þar með þcim; er byrlinn þvínæst á landi ok i skógi, verum minime opinato pincerna repente surgit in mare desilil et lerram natando petit. Gudmundus mox hastile arreptum jaculatus crus pincernœ rulnerat, nec magis effccit, nam pincerna mox in terram ascendit et in silvam effugit, S. 2) magni, id., S. 3) gilda, magno, S. 4) tiðendi, segir Oddr, þau oss mun óþörf vera; hvat sér þú, segir Ásmundr; ek sé, nora, inquit Oddus, quce nobis sinistre augurantur; quid rides, inquit Asmundus; rideo, add. Ji, M. a \ þat var i öndverða Iýsíng, er þeir voru bunir; fóru þeir nú ofan með ánni, var þar (eitt nes) til annarrar handar. Oddr mælti, þá cr þeir liöfðu farit um hrið: hvat sjái þér tiðenda? Engi sjá vér, segir Ásmundr, eða hvat sér þú? Ek sé þau, segir Oddr, er oss eru óþörf, primo diluculo ad redeundum parati, secundo flumine progrediuntur, ex altero latere lingulam quandam terrce hubentes. Quum ita aliquatenus processissent, Oddus, quid noti ridetis? interrogavit. Nihil ridemus, inquit Asmundus, sed quid tu? Ea, inquit Oddus, video, quce nobis minus u/ilia fore pulo, S. 5) skógi, id. S. 6) öxi, B; balöxi. M. 7) fa*ra Öárblutinn, res por- tatc, M. ®) klumbu, id. M. 9) bajar, domum, M. tOy om. M.
