Some of their words were: "their (the parents) culture dictates them not to he involved... the school system at framhaldsskólar is rather com- plicated... it's like two different worlds that have never met. They just send their children to school and that is it..." c. Teachers' perceptions: A total of 11 teachers were interviewed and 2 of them were of foreign origin. In general, the teachers agreed that most parents attended parent-teacher conferences when they were invited and interpreters were pro- vided. They also perceived the parents to be insecure with the school system, but they hoped that the publication of the informa- tion brochure in thirteen different languages would help the parents to understand it a little better. However, one of the teachers warned that: "There is more information now, thanks to the publication of the brochure, but it needs to be introduced, presented, and explained well or it will not be read and understood. Par- ents don't seek information by themselves; they need explanations." Another teacher said: "They are insecure with the school but we work well together once we are in contact. Teachers need to take a lot of initiative in making contact with the parents.” d. Services available to parents: At the time of the interviews, the school stated that, in general, the only service they could offer was providing interpreters for the parent-teacher conferences and distribut- ing the multi-language information brochure at grunnskólar level. In addition, three grunnskólar brought a social worker into their schools once a week to help the parents with everything from reading official letters, to housing, calling public offices and apply- ing for summer schools or signing up for daycare for their children. e. Services schools wish to provide to parents: A common view was that in order for the parents to assist their children they them- selves needed to have a better understand- ing of the integration process and the educa- tion system. Therefore, both teachers and administrators would like to reach out to parents by creating projects involving par- ents, holding classes for teaching language, society culture (the written and unwritten rules of the society), school culture (politics, services, their rights to ask and place demands on the schools that are educating their children...), computers etc. One princi- pal would like the classes and workshops to be taught inside the school so the parents would have a chance to mingle, meet others and get to know the school better. They also would like to hold workshops, hire a liaison person in order to inform parents more about the values and the types of education being offered at framhaldsskólar. Last but not least, as one teacher said: "I would like to see multicultural teaching strengthened where teach- ing in schools would connect with the home cul- tures of our students." 2.
