Icelandic music is not only performed but also composed. Among the many names that may be mentioned here are the clarinettists Einar Johannesson, SigurSur I. Snorrason and Oskar Ingolfsson, the violinists GuSny Gubmundsdottir (leader of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra) and Rut Ingolfsdottir, the viola player Unnur Sveinbjarnardottir, the cellist Haflibi Hallgrimsson (a former member of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra in Edinburgh and a significant^ com- poser), the pianists Edda Erlendsdottir and Anna Aslaug Ragnarsdottir, the choral conductor Porgerbur Ingolfsdottir (conductor of the Hamrahllb Choir), the orchestral conductor Gubmundur Emilsson (who conducts the Icelandic Chamber Orchestra), and the singers Olof Kolbrun Harbardottir and Rut Magnusson. The starting of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra neces- sitated, as has been earlier mentioned, the recruitment of a number of musicians from abroad. With the help of Dr. Franz Mixa in Graz in Austria, who had been a teacher at the Reykjavik College of Music during the 1930’s, two musi- cians came to Iceland who were to play an important role in the development of the Icelandic musical scene, not only as members of the new symphony orchestra but also as composers. The first of these was the trumpeter Paul Pamp- ichler (bom 1928), who, in keeping with Icelandic custom and law, changed his name to Pall P. Palsson. The second was the hom player Herbert Hriberschek (bom 1926), whose Icelandic name is Herbert H. Agustsson. Pall P. Palsson came to Iceland to play the trumpet in the symphony orchestra and to lead the Reykjavik Brass Band. He later established himself as a conductor. He has also been the conductor of the Reykjavik Male Choir and has been instrumental in introducing new choral techniques and reper- toire to this particularly conservative branch of musical life. Towards the end of the 1950’s he studied conducting in Hamburg. Since then he has conducted the Iceland Sym- phony Orchestra and has been outstanding as a competent and ambitious interpreter of new Icelandic music in par- ticular. He has on several occasions conducted the Kammer- sveit Reykjavlkur, an excellent chamber ensemble for old and new music. For a long time Pall P. Palsson composed mostly Pall Pampichler Palsson 125
