composing the piece. The violin is also made of wood and has a wooden sound and is simply “hollowed-out wood”, as it is called in an old Icelandic ballad. The work has four movements without any common factor. The tree, or the wood (or the violin) is regarded from different angles. The movements probably describe the composer’s different moods and possibly this interpretation too. The movements are called God tre (Fine Trees), Hrygg tre (Sad trees), 08 tre (Mad trees) and Pogul. . . (Silent. . .). The second movement is a two-part lament, and the final movement has no silence. The music is freely composed, the first and third movements consisting of short fragments, while the second and fourth have longer phrases. The fourth movement is in fact a single, continuous arch - a violin bow? Jonas Tomasson has also composed a number of orchestral works including two symphonies, one of which is in reality a viola concerto, Eleven Meditations on a Settlement in celebration in 1974 of the 1100th anniversary of the settlement in 974, Playplay (1972), Orgia (1973) and two Jonas Tomasson: Orgia (1973). ITM, Reykjavik. 2. solo concertos, one for violin (1975) and one for two pianos (1985). From several points of view, Orgia may be selected as a good illustration of his style. The title is to be taken in its original Greek meaning, i.e. “a ritual act” and not 136
