EINAR JÓNSSON was born on n May 1874, at Galtafell Farm in the district of Árnes-
sýsla, where for generations his ancestors had been farmers.
Precociously hc showed marked signs of artistic talents, and at the age nineteen he went to
Copenhagen for the purpose of studying art. During his early years there he studied under
various private masters and later at the Academy of Arts.
When in 1901 he exhibited his - long since famous - statue the Outlaw at the Charlotten-
borg Art Exhibition, he rcceived his first public recognition as an artist of note, and he was
then given a stipcnd by the Althing. This enabled him to proceed to Italy and other Conti-
nental countries for the purpose of further study.
Accompanied by his wife he went in 1917 to the United States, where he had been com-
missioned to exccute a statue of the Icelander, Thorfinn Karlsefni, who in the earliest years
of the eleventh century was the first white man to settle in America. That statue is to be seen
in Fairmont Park in Philadelphia.
Whcn he came back to Iceland in 1920, the building, erected in Reykjavik conjointly by
the Goverment and public enterprise, to house his works, was nearing completion. In that
building Mr and Mrs Jónsson resided up to his death, which took place on 18 October, 1954,
and thcre he had his studio. All his works are now on view there.
A notable feature of Einar Jónsson’s art is the religious spirit with which all his works are
imbued. He was a great beliver in the ulfimate vitctory of truth and beauty over the meaner
forccs. Mostly his work is symbolical.
In 1944, whcn he was seventy, Einar Jónsson published two independcnt works, Minningar
(Reminiscences) and Skodanir (My Philosophy), while in 1954 a wolume containing repro-
ductions of all his works was published.
