88 GUIDE TO ICELAND. beauty, are the Cathedral, the newly-erected Senate House, the College (Latinuskoli), Hospital (where a warm hath is obtainable), Government House, a large wooden store known as ‘ Glasgow,’ and a building, said by a recent writer to be used as Jail and Museum. In 1878, when the author was at Reykjavik, the Antiquarian Mu- seum and a. Free Library were located in a large loft under the roof of the Cathedral, and a Natural History Collection in a room at the College. Near the Cathedral, in the centre of the town, is a grassy plot. on which stands a monument to Albert Thorvaldsen, the great sculptor—who was of Icelandic descent and bom at sea between Iceland and Denmark. A short distance out to the rear of the town, on the west of the tarn, is a neatly kept cemetery; and near by a rifle range. On the rise to the east, a short distance out of the town, is a small tower erected as an Observatory; but it is said to have been built on magnetic rock, and to be useless for the purpose for which it was erected; it is therefore closed. On the east rise in the town is a Windmill used for grinding the im- ported cerealia. There are two hotels, Smith’s—formerly a club-house—ranking first, and Japhetsson’s, smaller, but clean and comfortable; a number of stores, where everything required by the Icelanders is sold from a needle to an anchor; a post-office ; two booksellers; a like number of silversmiths, printers, harness-makers, and photo- graphers ; one druggist, a hatter, and several other handy-craftsmen, and last, hut not least, there is the very fair dealing man who makes a business of furnishing foreign visitors with guides and ponies, Geir Zcega. What strikes the stranger most is the entire absence of wheeled vehicles, for, with the exception of one or two carts used for the carting in of peat from a bog beyond the tarn, there are none in the Icelandic ^Metropolis. The founder of the town may he said to have been Tngolfr, one of the first Norse settlers, who, it will he remembered, found his high-seat pillars stranded in the bay, in the year a.d. 877, three years after he landed in Iceland. Naturally in the vicinity of the dwelling of a powerful chief like Tngolfr and his descendants a number of men would have their dwellings—retainers, freed thralls, boatmen,.boat-builders, fishermen, and others, and thus sprung up a village which in the course of time became the capital of the island. The Antiquarian Museum, the Ornithological and Mineralogical Collections, and the Library, whether located in the Jail or still in
