58 GUIDE TO ICELAND. chiefs had seats in the Aiding, and each of them was to take with him two of his retainers.’ Other authorities, on the contrary, say, and the author believes correctly, that this division of the country did not take place until about thirty years later. It is possible that the composition of the first Aiding will ever be a matter of dispute; as in those days ‘ there were no hooks, everything was traditional; the law itself was committed to memory and the custody of faithful lips.’ The men who thus made the law their study, and ‘ learnt its traditional precepts by heart,’ were termed ‘Logmen’ (Lawmen). They were private persons ‘ invested with no official character,’ hut who enjoyed, it is evident from the Sagas, great influence; being consulted by their neighbours much as a solicitor is in our own land to-day; with this difference, there was no payment of fees. ISTjal was one of the most famous Logmen of the latter part of the tenth century; and the author is under an impression gleaned from the Saga of which he is the hero, that a Ldgma^r could not plead at the Aljnng on behalf of another, he could only instruct him how to plead. "When the AIJn'ng was established, a ‘ Speaker of the Law ’ (Logsoguma^r) was appointed. To him all who were in need of a legal opinion, of information as to what was and what was not law, had a right to turn during the hearing of a case before the Aljnng. His term of office was restricted to three years, hut he was eligible for re-election. TJlfljot, the framer of the statutes, was the first Speaker of the Law. The Aljnng was both a deliberative and an executive assembly, it made new laws and administered justice, and ‘ was in a word both Parliament and High Court of Justice in one.’ Every one who appeared before the court as a party to a suit or witness, and even the judges themselves, had, prior to the introduction of Christianity, to swear an oath on a sacred ring (brought from the temple of the High Priest) after it had been sprinkled with the blood of an animal sacrificed to the gods : ‘ So help him Njord, Prey and the almighty god, Thor (for), that his cause was, or that his witness or judgment should he, to the best of his belief, right and just.’ The statute regulating the form of the court of justice said, that ‘three twelves were to judge in all suits.’ Whether the country was divided into four quarters or not when the Aljnng was first established, we find it recorded that in the year 959-960 the island was divided into quarters; and it being found inconvenient that all petty cases should be taken before the Aljnng,
