Under cover of the smoke, with his cloth- ing in flames, he first got on to the roof and thence to the ground, when he ran down-wind to a little tarn wherein he extinguished his flaming garments. The news of the burning—it is known and spoken of as ‘ the burning’ to this day—of Berg\6rshvoll, and the slaughter of Ujal, with his wife and sons, spread like wildfire over the whole island, and a strong party of the friends of the late lawgiver determined to avenge their deaths. At the next meeting of the Aiding the friends of Njal made an attempt to bring the men who had burned Berg\6rshvoll to j ustice, but failing in this, they thereupon attacked and, although inferior in numbers, defeated the 1 burners ’ in a desperate fight at yingvellir. The conduct of a very powerful Christian priest at this juncture is rather amusing, and must be noticed, though this outline of the Saga is running to a great length. He could not be persuaded to take up arms for or against either party; but he agreed with the ‘ Njalites ’ that he and his strong band of armed followers would hold the pass from the ‘ Thing- fields ’ through the gap in the eastern wall of the Almannagja, and should the Njalites be defeated—as they were likely to be, being greatly inferior in numbers—he would allow them to pass through, and then prevent their enemies from following them; but should the Njalites get the upper hand, and the opposite party try to escape to the rift, he would not allow them to do so until he thought a sufficient number of them had been slain to atone for the death of Hjal, his family and people. As said, the Njalites got the upper hand, and, as foreseen, Flosi and his followers sought to flee to the natural fortress of the Almannagja, but were turned back by the priest’s followers into the hands of their victorious assailants, and being demoralised, great was the slaughter. This conflict bade fair to bring about an universal civil war, as members of a number of the most powerful families were killed; but ultimately matters were settled by payment of blood-fines in some instances, and by the banishment for various periods of the survivors of those who had taken an active part in the ‘ burning,’ and the affray at yingvellir. One man, however, determined that only with his life, or the death of all the survivors of those who tad a hand in the death of his old friends, Njal and his sons, should the blood-feud cease. This was Kari, a man ‘thorough’ enough to have pleased the author of ‘ Guy Livingstone.’ He
