Should it he found worthy of a sojourn of several days, the guide could he sent hack to Ileynivellir to bring round the ponies and baggage. (jkimsI and Nob’SbA—Two tributaries of the Western Hvita, a large river falling into the Borgarfjorir (Burg-fjord). Like the southern river of the same name it is a Jokulsa, and the remarks respecting the ascent of salmon in that river apply likewise to this. The JVor&rd, as its name implies, is the northernmost, and it is also the largest of the two tributaries, and hears the name of being the best salmon river in all Iceland. The catch was so large in 1877 that Mr. Ritchie, a Scotch fish merchant, thought it would pay to have a steam launch running between the mouth of the Hv'itd and Reykjavik, and accordingly he had one there in 1878, when the author was at the capital. The author’s guide in the south that year was a native of this part of the island, and earlier in the summer he had accompanied a party of Englishmen who had fair sport in these rivers. They were also by the author’s advice visited in 1880 by Capt. M., Eoyal Artillery, and the author was told by the Captain of the Camoens, by which vessel he returned, that he caught twenty-seven salmon. The best farm at which to stay to fish the Grimed is Hvitarvellir, owned by a farmer named Andreas, who speaks English, and is willing to accommodate visitors. To fish the iVorSrd, the best farm at which to seek quarters would be pvera, the residence of Jon NorStunga, who is also, it is said, very obliging to English sportsmen. Either of these farms can be reached in one day from Reynivellir. A few miles farther up the valley the IIVita receives another tributary, the pvera, which the author’s guide said is worth a trial in cold summers, when the water in the main river is clearer than in warm ones, and the salmon consequently ascend to tributaries more distant from the sea than they do when the river is in full flood, with milk-white turbid water from the glaciers. The pvera is a good trout stream, it is said. Horth-west of the Borgarfjorir, three largish streams, the Ldngd (Long-river), Alfta (? Swan-river), and the Hita (Hot-river), enter the sea ; but, when questioned by the author, his guide said, although he had been in all three of the valleys through which the streams flow, he had never heard that the farmers in either valley caught any salmon, and therefore concluded that none were caught. Excursions can be made up the valley of the Mvita, to the Fiskivotn, mentioned when treating of shooting, which abound in trout and waterfowl. (See Routes 3 and 4.)
