SALMON RIVERS AND TROUT STREAMS. 83 The LaxI falling into the StrauhejaitSar CKs (Stream-fjords Outlet).—The Os is a peculiar-shaped inlet on the south coast of the promontory terminating in Sncefells Jokull. This Laxa is a small hut good salmon river, and is distant about one and a half days’ journey from the farms on the Nur’&ra and Gr'msa, and four from Reykjavik. Good accommodation at Miklaholt parsonage. It is hut a day’s journey hence to the famous basaltic caverns at Stapi, and likewise to Stykkishdlmr, a trading town on the BreffiifjorSr, at which the Danish steamers call. (Route 3.) The Lax! falling into the Hvahmsfjor’Sr (Coomhe-fjord).— This river is distant but four hours’ ride from Bor%eyri, a trading post at the head of the Hrdtafjor^Sr (? Hrutr’s-fjord), a day’s journey from Stykkishdlmr, and five days’ from the capital. Several very fair farms in the valley. An English angler tried this river in the summer of 1878, but the author did not hear with what result. The Camoens occasionally calls at BoF&eyri, hut the Danish steamers do not call—at least they have not hitherto. One day’s journey south of BorSeyri lie numerous lakes, which are so abundantly stocked with char and trout that they are named Fiskivotn, Anglice Fish Lakes. They can also he visited, as previously mentioned, vid the valley of the Sv'ita, hy proceeding up the valley of the Nor’&rd, and also through the Reykholtsdalr. (See lloute 3.) There are no farms within many miles of the lakes, nor boats thereon; therefore a party of sportsmen would need a tent, and a Berthon folding-boat would greatly increase the sport they would have. Grouse are said to be very numerous in ‘ good Rjupa years’ on the Arnarvatnsher’di, the moor around the lakes, while the latter are the breeding grounds of a variety of water-fowl; and also, in the latter end of July and early part of August, are much frequented by swans. A party of sportsmen, selecting this portion of the island for a sporting ground, should make Bor&eyri their head-quarters, arrange for a room with the farmer at either Hvammr or Byrastaftir, two farms in the upper part of the valley of the JSTor&ra, and camp out on the moors in fine weather, retreating to the farm should they encounter a spell of bad weather. By arranging thus, salmon fishing could be had in the JYor&rd, and trout fishing in the lakes, during the month of July, and swan, wild-duck and grouse shooting during the month of August. Mi’Sfjar’Sra (Mid-fjord-river).—A river in which a considerable number of salmon are annually caught, but no rod-fishing is obtainable without buying off the nets. The pastor at MelstarSr
