EXCURSIONS FROM THE CAPITAL. 91 the islets on which to land, as, in addition to the eider-ducks and their nests, there is, to the west of the substantial stone residence of the owner of the islet, a chapel that was part of a monastery founded in A.n. 1226. Burton describes it as ‘ a solid box of rough basalt, squared only at the corners, with rude arches over doorway and windows; the dwarf “ campanile,” a shed perched upon the roof, shelters three bells. In the massive red door was a huge iron key, which may date from the days of the ghostly owners. The roof is supported by heavy solid rafters, and the furniture is older and more ornamental than usual; the benches are carved, and the colours are the tricolor, blue, red, and green.’ To’ Hafnaefjor^r (Haven-fjord).—A trading town of some 400 inhabitants, at the head of the fjord which gives the town its name, distant two hours’ steam from the capital. The Danish steamers every voyage, during the interval between their arrival at Reykjavik and departure therefrom, make a trip to Safnarfj&r&r, and usually return the same day. If one of the steamers should happen to be in the bay at the time of the tourist’s arrival, inquiry should be made of the Agent at Reykjavik as to what day the trip will be made and it may be that this excursion will fit in with other arrange- ments made by the tourists. The fare is a mere trifle. The scenery around Hafnarfjor&r is very wild and volcanic, bristling lava-floods in every direction. The pleasantest way to visit this little town is to hire a guide and pony for a couple of days and ride to Hafnarfjbr'Sr the first day, and sleep there. Small, but clean, inn. Hake an early start the next morning and return vid Bessasta’Sir ’(? Bear-stead) on Alftanes, the headland north of the JIafnarfjbRSr. RessastA6ir is a large building said to have been built about the middle of the thirteenth century by Snorri Sturluson, the author of the * prose Edda,’ who, it will be remembered, was also one of the traitorous chiefs who plotted with King Hacon of Norway to place Iceland under his sceptre. Erom 1805 to 1846, when the present College at Reykjavik was established, Ressasta^Sir was used as the College. Prior to 1801 there were two Colleges, one near each of the Cathedrals, Solar and Skdlholt; but that year it was arranged that there should be but one bishopric instead of two, and that the Cathedral should be in the capital. One can ride from Reykjavik to Safnarfjor6r comfortably in three hours, so that the return journey can easily be made the same day if wished, and another day devoted to the excursion to Ressasta/’Sir, which may be reached from the capital in a little over two hours.
