150 GUIDE TO ICELAND. over, and there were but two or three little holes showing the boiling mud below, while a group of large cauldrons had been formed a short distance off. The boiling mud is as black as ink and of the consistency of porridge, and is very suggestive of the food one can imagine is provided in the infernal regions ; and it therefore may perhaps be termed with propriety ‘ Hell Broth.’ It is kept in a constant state of ebullition, and large quantities of that in the largest of the cauldrons is at intervals ejected with con- siderable noise to a height of from six to eight feet. These boiling mud cauldrons are a very interesting, though certainly not a beautiful phenomenon, and being situated at the junction of ex- tensive lava-beds with a solfatara at the base of a range of volcanic mountains, which show signs of activity in the form of innumerable fumarolar, they and their surroundings are very suggestive, as an American said of the Yellowstone region, ‘ of the Inferno very thinly crusted over.’ Some lines by ‘ IJmbra,’ though not intended to do so, graphically describe the landscape here:— ‘ Wide ruin spread tlie element around, His havoc leagues on leagues may you descry; And still the smouldering flame lurks underground, And tosses boiling fountains to the sky! ’ After examining the eastern solfatara and its cauldrons, the travellers will return through the pass, and walk southward to the Uverfjall through the eastern solfatara ; which differs somewhat from the one on the east side of the range, there being more fuma- rolar and no mud cauldrons. The Uverfjall is a large circular crater, with an encircling wall of volcanic cinders and ash, about 700 feet in height above the lake = 1,600 feet above sea-level. It is said to have erupted in 1728, but its formation is prehistoric. It is the largest crater in the vicinity of Myvatn, and a conspicuous feature in the landscape, but its circumference and depth are not known to the author. Some ten miles south of the Uverfjall is another solfatara, the Fremrinamar (Farther-solfatara), and a large crater; but these are seldom visited, it being a most fatiguing day’s journey for the ponies, and there being but little to interest any one who has seen the volcanic phenomena nearer Myvatn. Pobty-sixth Day.—An easy day’s excursion to Leirhnulcr, Krajla, and'the _ZZrafntinnuhryggr (Raven-peaks’-back); returning to Reylc- jahlffi. The former are two famous volcanoes, and the third is a ridge, just east of Krajla, partly formed of obsidian—hence its
