ironies BY Tine AUTHOR (continued). Schubeler and Collett, which respectively illustrate botanical and zoological distribution in the Scandinavian peninsula.’ ‘ The Live Stock Journal’s ’ critique was as follows: — ‘Now that everyone goes to Norway at some time or other, all books—and they are growing—on the sport and adventure to be had on its fjelds and fjords are eagerly sought after. The one before us now is a translation of Professor Friis’s “ Tilfjelds,” a work of the highest authority, and one which every sportsman visiting Norway ought to have. In its English dress it will be available to a large number to wiiom in the original it has hitherto been a sealed book. Mr. Lock won the copy from which he made his translation as a prize in a sort of Arctic Wimbledon in which he look part against Norwegian riflemen at Harstad. Save for the honesty which confesses it, no one would guess this was a translation, it reads so fluently and easily.’ Published by the Translator, at 16, Kingston Terrace, Charlton, S.E. Only a few copies now Remaining on Hand. ICELAND. Crown 8vo., 110 pages, cloth, bevelled boards, 3s. 6d. Net, post free. ASKJA, ICELAND’S LARGEST VOLCANO. MONOGRAPH, descriptive of the above Volcano and its XjL Eruptions in 1875 ; with a Chapter on the Genesis and Geologt op Iceland, and a lakge map of the island specially com- piled for this work and ‘ The Guide to Iceland,’ by W. G. Lock, F.H.G.S., who has twice visited the Volcano. Askja is a vast Crater over 17 miles in circumference, lying nearly 4,000 feet above sea level. The eruptions in 1875 continued for several months, and the pumice and ashes erupted covered an area of 3,000 square miles. A lava-flood at the same time forced an outlet from a rift commencing at a spot 30 miles distant from Askja. presumably above a sub- terraneous channel connected with that volcano. The lava now covers a tract about twenty miles in length, by from one to five in breadth. At the commencement of the eruption an explosion took place which disrupted a mass of the lava-deposits in the crater five miles in circumference, and of unknown but immense thickness, which sunk in the bowels of the mountain to a depth of over 700 feet! So violent was the concussion that it caused an earth- quake felt over the whole island, but most severely in the N.E.. where rifts of immense depth, and over twenty miles in length, were torn in the rocky strata forming that part of the island. Published by the Author, at 16, Kingston Terrace, Charlton, S.E., who will forward Copies on receipt of Crossed Cheque, or P.O.O., payable at Lower Charlton Post Office.
