ROUTE IV.—UP THE WEST COAST.
165
Lord Garvagh’s experience it will be seen that this virgin peak
might, under favourable circumstances, be vanquished by men not
new to mountain work in one day, by setting out from Bw&ir early
in the morning, so as to reach the ice about nine or ten a.h., just
as the heat of the sun has taken the glaze from the night’s frost
off the surface of the ice.
Fourth Day.—Excursion from p'ingnes to the Geysirs in the
Beykholtsdalr. An interesting and easy day’s excursion, returning
to pingnes. For description of the thermal springs, see ante, pages
125 and 126. A week may be pleasantly spent in this part of the
country by anglers, there being three salmon rivers within easy
reach. See List of Salmon Kivers. Good shooting is also to be had
in August.
Fifth 1)ay.—pingnes to StivSarhraun, or Uvammr. There are two
routes from this place to the N.W. peninsula, but the one vid
Sta¥>arhraun, although a day longer, is recommended, as Eldborg, the
first volcano to erupt subsequently to the settlement of Iceland, will
be seen, and the scenery is far superior to that on the other route.
Eldborg is described ante, page 127. The He'itd has to be ferried
shortly after leaving pingnes, and then the road to Uvammr lies up
the valley of the Nor^rd. From Uvammr a stiffish day’s ride over
an elevated plateau, the EoUavor^uhei^i (Holt-cairn-heath), will
bring the travellers to Bor^Seyri trading post. About midway
in crossing the heath will be seen a mass of rock, known as the
IlaP&arstein (Height-stone), which is believed to have been a Pagan
sacrificial altar. From Ilvammr, those of a geological turn of mind
may ascend Baula (the Cow), a cone of curious formation.
Sixth Day.—Stafearhraun to HjarSarholt (Herd-holt). Eldborg
will be seen shortly after setting out. Thence the travellers will
ride up to the head of the Ilitardalr, and wend their way between
the mountains at the base of the Snafell peninsula, by a route not
shown on the map, to the head of the Ilvammsfjor^r. Grand scenery
during this day’s ride. Good quarters at Ejnr^&arholt. This neigh-
bourhood is full of interest to those who have read the Hjal and
Laxdasla Sagas. Ejjar&arholt was the home of Olave the Peacock,
and Hb<kuldsta/&ir, on the opposite side of the river, the birth-place
of Hallger’Sa, Gunnar’s wife. There are salmon in the river here.
Seventh Day.—Hjar^&arholt to Bor^eyri. An easy day’s ride.
The route lies up the Laxdrdalr, and thence over the Laxardaluhei^i
to the shore of the Hrutafjbrf>r. The merchant at BorSeyri receives
travellers.
Eighth Day.—At BorSeyri. The ponies will need a day’s rest,
