176 GUIDE TO ICELAND. 30th January, 1882, also makes mention of 1 very large and dangerous quicksands ’ in this region, and says that ‘ it is mainly from this fact that so few persons ever cross it. In several places these quick- sands extend over a space of several acres, and it is quite impossible to tell, except by practical experience, the position of the solid ground.’ The Yatnahjaixavege.-—No English traveller, it is believed, has ever crossed the island by this route, though several have visited the liverarvdlir hot springs at the base of the Hofs Jokull. The Rev. E Metcalfe, in ‘ The Oxonian in Iceland,’ gives an account of a journey over part of this route. The scenery in many parts of the interior traversed by this mid-island track is magnificent, especially the view of the grand group of ice-clad mountains, of which the Lang Jokull is the chief. The Uvitarvatn (White-river-lake) at the base of the Joklar, the source of the southern IL 'ita, is a'grand Alpine lake, and is frequently floe-covered far into the summer. In light marching order the distance between farm and farm may be accomplished in three days, and the journey from Reykjavik to Akur- eyri, or vice versd, in seven days: Reykjavik to yiingvellir the first day, thence to Uaukadalr the second day. Thus far, see Route I. 1st and 3rd days, pages 93-101. A local guide must be obtained here. The first night’s camping ground will be near Blafell (Blue- fell), and the second near the Ilverarvettir (Hot-spring-fields). Pas- turage very poor at both places. The next day’s journey will bring the travellers to the head of the Eyjafjar&ardalr, where there are several farms. Akureyri may be reached from here in six hours, good bridle-path down the valley. There is another route from south to north, that over the Storisandr (Great-sand). This is frequently travelled, as it is only necessary to camp out one night. Going south from Akureyri, Route YI. is followed as far as Silfrastav&ir, whence one branches off to Mcel fell (Measure-fell), four hours’ ride only. Shortly after leaving here the Great-sand is entered, and the second day’s journey will bring the travellers to Iialmanstunga, whence to Reykjavik, see Routes IY. and YI., pages 162 to 165 and 174. In conclusion, the author earnestly advises visitors to Iceland, especially the young and hardy, to strike out paths for themselves in the inhabited districts to places lying three to four days’ ride off the routes given. There is many an interesting spot where an alien has never yet set foot, and trout stream and 1 fish lake ’ whose waters have never laved an angler’s line. Two promising fields may be men- tioned ; the north-eastern part of the country, and the N.W. penin- sula north of the Branga Jokull. In the district first named, doubtless
