INTRODUCTION. 3 mud-cauldrons, hot springs, live sulphur-pits, i.e. spots where the sublimation of this mineral is taking place, and other interesting volcanic phenomena, will likewise he seen. The tourist, if an angler, may obtain in addition a day or two’s very fair trout fishing. Route 1 will give all particulars. The cost of this highly interesting tour, including the hire of ponies, guide, etc., also first cabin passage and provisions to and from Scotland, will not exceed £30, if the tour is made by two persons travelling in company; and it may even be done for £ 20 if a dozen or more persons arrange to travel together. A number of the passengers by the Camoens invariably form such a party to visit pinffvellir, and the Gey sir, and of course by joining it tourists travelling alone, who would be satisfied with this short excursion, effect a considerable saving, as such a party only needs two or three men and a large tent, and each one has to bear but a pro- portionate part of the expense incurred. These parties, however, seldom go on as far as Hekla ; but in the future they should do so, and return via the south coast as recommended; for the tour would, as above said, just fill up the interval between the arrival of the Camoens on one voyage and her departure on the next. It is utterly impossible for tourists unacquainted with Icelandic or Danish to travel in Iceland unaccompanied by a native speaking English, to act in the double capacity of interpreter and guide ; and it is customary when travelling quickly, or any great distance, to have two ponies for each load, animate or inanimate, the ridden or laden pony being relieved every two hours or so, by transferring its rider or burthen to one of the comparatively fresh spare ones, which are driven by the guide on ahead—a long way ahead too, if the travellers are wise, that they may not he incommoded by the dust. Geir Zoega (pron. Geer Surgha), the only person from whom ponies are obtainable with certainty at Reykjavik, declines to furnish animals for long journeys unless two are hired for each person’s riding, and for every one and a half cwt. of baggage taken. The Gey sir is very uncertain in its displays, and the nearest farm where decent quarters are obtainable is some distance off, therefore a tent is quite indispensable if tourists would be on the spot when it ‘ Erupts its steaming columns high.’ What is somewhat annoying, the expense of hiring and transport- ing a tent about on this tour has to be incurred by two or more persons travelling together, or even by a tourist travelling alone with his guide, merely for use on the night or two that they
