14 GUIDE TO ICELAND. filled valleys with a background of ice-clad mountains, present another weirdly grand landscape for which it would he difficult to find a compeer out of Iceland. Route 2 will conduct the tourist hither, and also to the farms at the base of the 6reef a Jokull. A list of all the Icelandic volcanoes mentioned in the Icelandic annals, and the number of eruptions with which each is credited, will be found in the right-hand upper corner of the map attached to this work; and as each will be briefly described in the Route through that part of the country in which it is situated, there is no occasion, the chief ones having been alluded to, to notice more of them here. Besides those already mentioned, the most famous ‘ sights ’ of Iceland are (1) A'sbyrgi (the Gods’ retreat or inclosure), a re- markable > -shaped valley insulating a vast mass of rock. This, in the author’s opinion, must be classed among the most wonderful of the Icelandic phenomena ; the valley being such as would be formed were it possible to remove a gigantic >-shaped mass of unchangeable rock, with arms 300 feet in thickness, 500 yards 'in width, and a mile apart at their extremities, that had stood in the midst of a number of molten lava flows while they were being deposited, leaving a triangular impression with vertical declivities on either hand. (2) The Hlj6¥>aklettar (Sounding or Speaking-cliffs), a group of fantastically-shaped, insulated masses of igneous rock and curiously-formed craters in the wild valley of the northern Joltulsa (one of the chief rivers), which present the appearance of a vast ruinous castle, and, so perfectly do they echo back sounds, one can fancy that it was here in the valley of the northern Jolculsd, and not on the bank of the Cephlsus, that Echo, the Oreade, pined away upon being slighted by Narcissus; or that Scott’s enchanted castle in the vale of St. John had been transported to Iceland, Route 3 will conduct the tourist to these places, also to (3) the Northern Geysir, the Uxahver (Ox-spring), which ‘ spouts ’ with great regularity at intervals varying from six to ten minutes ; to (4) the Boiling-mud Cauldrons and other phenomena in the solfatarar round Myvatn ; to Iceland’s most famous fall, (5) the Dettifoss ; likewise to (6) the GcrSafoss (Gods- fall) and (7) JEldeyjafoss (Fire-island-fall). These falls no admirer of cataracts should neglect to visit ; the terribly Plutonic nature of the chasm into which the waters of the one first named leap, far exceeds in gloom and weirdness the chasm of the Yoringfoss, the most famous fall in Norway. The tour laid down in Route 3 is unquestionably one of the most interesting that can be made in any part of the world, one, of which the author thinks it can
