INTRODUCTION. 15 safely be said, that cannot be equalled anywhere, save in the Yellowstone region of North America or among the Hawaiian islands. Starting from Reykjavik, pingvellir, the Gey sir, Hekla and the Gulljoss, being the sights de rigeur, are first visited ; then striking across country from the Geysir by a fine mountain pass, with the grand glacial scenery of the Geitlands (Goatland’s), Sljaldbrei^ar (Broad-shield) and Lang (Long) Jiiklar on the right, the traveller will descend into the wonderful valley of Reykholt (Reek-holt), where hot springs issue from a rocky islet in the midst of the icy-cold river. A day or so later, if an excursion is not made to the Sneefells peninsula, a descent will be made into the Surtshettir (Surtr’s cave), an immense lava-cavern, with an ice ‘ gallery of fairy-like magnificence, everywhere hung with the purest crystal, which the light of our torches reflected in a thousand ways.’1 Thence to the north coast over a wild uninhabited moor- land waste, studded with innumerable lakelets abounding in fish and fowl. Holar cathedral, where a printing-press was established in about a.d. 1530, and many Icelandic bishops are interred, will be visited en route to Akureyri, the chief town in the north. The tour culminates in a visit to Asiya, taking the 1875 lava-flood in the Myvatns Orafi on the way, the path thereto lying up the weirdly wild valley of the northern Jokulsa, which forms fall after fall, rapid after rapid, as it courses downward to the sea from the elevated plateau of the interior. This tour, returning to Scotland from one of the northern or eastern ports, would occupy six to eight weeks from the time of landing at Reykjavik, and £ 80 to £ 90 would cover the expenses of two persons for that period, if ponies were bought (ten would be needed) and sold when done with—say for a pound a piece, which is about as much as would be obtained for them in the latter part of the summer. Even this, the most comprehensive tour practicable with pleasure and safety within the limits of an Icelandic summer, will not ex- haust the wonders of Iceland, but leave much to see on a future visit. There are (8) the celebrated Basaltic Caverns at Stapi, near Sncefells Jokull on the west coast (the Jokull chosen by Jules Yerne as the volcanic outlet through which to descend to the centre of the earth). Route 4 will give full particulars ; and also direct the tourist who may wish to explore the north-west peninsula, and invade the icy precincts of the Rranga (? Lonely-peak) and Gldrnu (? Noisy) Jiiklar, how to do so. This is a very grand but some- 1 ‘ Voyage de la Recherche/
