INTRODUCTION. 19 present time an occasional sporting visitor is allowed to shoot at will over the moorland wastes; hut without doubt an influx of sportsmen will cause payment to he demanded, these wastes being private property or glebe lands. There are no fjeld wastes in Iceland, abounding in game, the property of the State, as in Norway. However, as the farmers and peasants sell the grouse they shoot and snare to the Danish merchants (who pack them in salt for exportation to Copenhagen) for a sum equivalent to three half- pence each, permission to shoot will doubtless for many years to come be readily granted upon payment of that amount for every bird killed. Prior to last year when, as just observed, a law was passed protecting not only the feathered game but also the reindeer to the 1st August, all game was unprotected, save the seals and eider- duck ; and would have been still, had not certain English tourists and the French and Danish naval officers shot the birds down during the breeding season in a shameful manner. No such law was needed for the Icelanders themselves, for, to their credit be it said, they never shoot the grouse before the middle of August, Both seals and eider-duck are the property of the owner of the shore, and he may give permission to shoot the former, but not the latter. The seals are mostly caught in nets, and, save at the mouths of salmon-rivers, the owners of the shore which seals affect are averse to a gun being discharged in the vicinity. The lover of the trigger will find further on, in the Chapter devoted to Fishing and Shooting, and in the several Eoutes, full information as to the best localities to visit in search of sport. The angler will find a list of the Icelandic salmon rivers and the chief trout streams at the end of the same chapter, and in the Routes, mention will be made of the lakes and rivers abounding in fish in that part of the country to which they respectively appertain. The sporting tourist, who has not visited Iceland before, should make the greater part of the tour described in Route 3, or make an excursion to the sights de rigeur, return to Reykjavik and proceed thence round the coast by steamer to Akureyri, in the north, or to Sey^isjjor^&r, in the east, as the best grouse moors on the island and the habitats of two out of the three herds of reindeer are distant but from three to four days’ journey from those ports; where shot, gunpowder, not very good, and numerous other small stores, save cartridge cases and good tea are procurable. Ponies and guides may be obtained at Akureyri by writing by a prior
