OUTFIT, GUIDES AND PONIES.

in addition. It will be as well to observe here that if one takes
a long jointed rod to Iceland it invariably comes to grief sooner or
later. One soon tires of carrying it slung behind his back, and
affixes it in some manner to the saddle of a pack-pony ; a collision
occurs between that animal and another, or it brushes against a
rock or the corner of a building, and the finny tribes have nothing
more to fear from that implement of piscine warfare, for it will
assuredly be damaged beyond repair. This has happened twice to
fishermen in Iceland to the author’s knowledge. To obviate this
he has had made a seven joint rod of the stoutness of a light
salmon-rod, with 2ft. 6in. joints = to about 16ft. in length; and
every angler thinking of visiting Iceland, who purposes to travel
about in the interior, would do well to have one made, as it will
meet all his requirements, and in all probability return to England
but little the worse for its journeys in Iceland.
The box in which the rod and gun and rifle barrels are carried
must be partitioned off lengthwise, that one article may not come
in contact with another, and each pair of barrels and the rod will
need two straps screwed to the bottom of its compartment that
it may be firmly secured by them. A young sportsman, whom
the author met in Iceland in 1878, showed him his rifle-barrels,
which in a journey across country had been allowed in its case
to come in contact with the iron base of a re-capper, and a hole
was worn nearly through one barrel. Had he been fitted out
as here recommended, at a cost of a few pounds, a forty-guinea
rifle would not have been irreparably damaged.
The lid of the box should have a pair of stout hinges, three
would perhaps be better, and be secured by a hasp and padlock,
like the lids of the other boxes; and if the same key fits all
three, it will be preferable to having separate ones. Carry a
duplicate key in a safe place. Each of the three boxes should
have nailed round the edges of its lid a flap of leather about
three inches w’ide, which should be nailed down to the body of
the box at the back over the hinges. This precaution will prevent
rain driving in. There is no need to have this third box lined
with zinc, as it will be carried on top of the pack-saddle, where
it is very unlikely it will ever be immersed; and if on a pack-
saddle designed by the author, hereafter mentioned, will be come-
at-able without a minute’s delay.
This outfit of three boxes will do away with the necessity for carry-
ing a gun or rod slung behind one’s back. It looks very sportsman-
like, no doubt, in the eyes of young sportsmen to ride thus armed, but
