Another capital guide is Pal Palsson, Mr. Watts’ chief guide when he crossed the Vatna Jokull\ hut his present address is not known to the author. A letter to him sent three months beforehand inclosed in one to the postmaster at Reykjavik, with a request that it might he forwarded, would be sure to find him, and the time allowed would be ample to admit of a reply. He would be an excellent man to take for an assault upon the Kotlugjd volcano. At Aleureyri, the best guide obtainable is the son of the farmer at Mo^ruvellir agricultural college, distant two to three hours’ ride from the town. Any one purposing to start from Akureyri should address a letter to the learned and hospitable Herra Jon A. Hj altalin, the head master at Mo^&ruvellir, and should the farmer’s son be engaged he will doubtless recommend one of his pupils. It has been before mentioned that guides and ponies may be obtained at Akureyri by writing to Herra Havsteen at Oddeyri. At the other ports, save Sdsavik, two, or perhaps even three, couples of tourists would not find any great difficulty in obtaining ponies and a guide speaking English, the student sons of the farmers all being home for the summer vacation from June till October ; but if a number were to arrive at one time, there would doubtless be some delay in obtaining sufficient mounts. Ponies.—The Icelandic pony is a stoutly made, hardy, sure-footed and sagacious little animal, about thirteen hands high, without a particle of vice in its composition. They vary greatly in colour, chestnut, piebald, white and cream-coloured being the most com- mon. They go very willingly in company, but some have an almost insurmountable disinclination to going alone. The best riding ponies are known as Vakurhestar, that is, they amble, or move both legs on each side alternately, and consequently are very easy to ride. However, the author’s opinion is that they are not so sure-footed on bad ground as a trotting pony, and when they do stumble, fortunately it is but rarely, they fall sideways in a most dangerous manner. It is seldom that an Icelandic pony stumbles unless it is completely tired out, and even then it recovers itself with remarkable agility. The best ponies rarely fall to the traveller’s use, being worth about £20 on the island. With a rider not exceeding twelve stone, or a load of one and a half cwt., a pony will go at a moderate pace for eight hours daily for several days together, if allowed to graze for about an hour after being ridden for four.
