NOTES ON SPORT. 79 to the nearest trading post, and proceed thence direct to the shooting ground selected. In the south, the author has only shot in the vicinity of pingvellir, and in the lava-beds between the capital and Hafnarjjdr^r, and in neither place was game abundant in October. In August, however, it is said that the sunken plain at pingvellir is literally alive with grouse, and the author believes this to be the case, and that when he was there, the ground being bare of snow, the birds were on the mountains. For wildfowl shooting, the Fishivotn on the Arnarvatnshep&i (Route 3) are spoken of as the best place in all Iceland, though it is possible the scatter of lakes bearing the same name a few miles west of the Skaptar Jokull are equally as good. Ducks may be shot in any river where they do not breed in any great numbers, but where they do so in the vicinity of farms is generally a pro- claimed 1 egg ground,’ and it is not allowed to shoot ducks in such localities. This is the case on Mi/vatn and in several places on the Laxa flowing therefrom. The valley of the Jokulsa, north of the Dettifoss, is the most likely place the author is acquainted with for geese ; and an eagle or a falcon is generally to be seen near the islands chosen by the Anser genus as breeding grounds. Duck, curlew, plover and grouse are said to be very plentiful in the Myrarsysla (Fen-county) in the west, just north of the Borgarfjdr6r (Routes 3 and 4). Also in the east, in the valley of the Lagarfgot, and the author believes that on some of the moors in this district grouse are very plentiful indeed, for he is informed that a great number are shipped off from Sey^&isfjorSr every autumn. The author has never found snipe very numerous anywhere in his travels, a brace in the course of a day’s grouse shooting, now and then, being all that he has ever bagged. Reindeer.—These animals are not indigenous to Iceland, but are the descendants of a small herd brought from Norway. There are three herds known to exist on the island, and it is possible there is a fourth. Each herd has a separate habitat; the largest herd, numbering about 200, is chiefly found on the fjelds south-west of the Lagarfljot and north of the eastern Snafell; but these deer, or another herd, sometimes pay a visit to a smaller herd that has chosen a home among the mountain range north and south of Krafla,. The third herd, which now numbers about a score only, is found in the range of volcanoes running N.E. from Krisuvik, in the south, to pmgvallavatn. Seals.—The Phocce are very numerous on many parts of the coast, and are private property. They are usually caught in nets,
