ÁSGRÍMUR JÓNSSON
Ásgrímur Jónsson’s painting of Mt. Hekla from 1909, owned by the National Gallery
of lceland, is one of the first pastoral paintings of lcelandic art. Such paintings depict
the bliss of rural life and the harmony between man and nature. Reflected in this
particular painting is Ásgrímur’s entire attitude to the land, which was his major
interpretative theme during 60 years of a long and creative career as an artist. It is
founded on a deep reverence for nature, which to him was virtually a sacred precinct
to be entered only after having removed his shoes, as fervent believers do before
entering a temple of their faith. No God of wrath dwells in Ásgrímur’s landscapes, on
the contrary nature and its dwellers appear to be in harmony. Ásgrímur perceived
God in overall existence and at the same time he perceived God in individual natural
phenomena; in the branch of a tree, in a stone or a waterfall.
For Ásgrímur the search for beauty was almost of a religious nature: Beauty as a
salvation which led him to ever deeper self-understanding. It can be claimed without
fear of contradiction that Ásgrímur Jónsson served his entire life in the same place
of worship.
He can be considered as the musician in the band of men who pioneered lcelandic
art. Jón Stefánsson’s rationalism and the raging poetic spirit of Jóhannes Kjarval
were remote to him. Just as a musician interprets a musical composition with his
heart and soul, yet remains absolutely true to the score, so Ásgrímur interpreted the
landscape before him with the utmost veracity but added his feelings and thoughts.
In his art he sought for the same clarity and lightness which he found in his favourite
musician, Mozart. During his student years in Copenhagen he had already begun to
think about music and art simultaneously: “To me the beauty and delicacy of these
paintings were of some superior world, and the canvas crowded with notes as
though it could have been by Bach.” (Tómas Guðmundsson: Ásgrímur Jónsson
1962, p. 46.) Here Ásgrímur is referring to Rembrandt’s portraits which he saw in
Statens Museum for Kunst (The National Art Gallery of Denmark). Ásgrímur’s
student works are very much in the spirit of the seventeenth century Dutch masters,
being small and having a muted colour scale. His searches were extensive and led
him to, among others, the German naturalistic-romantic painters, but it is not until
Ásgrímur returned home to lceland that it is possible to perceive an independent
creativity in his works. In the Westman Isles in the summer of 1902, as he stands
and paints Eyjafjalla Glacier in the evening sun, he whisks away in an instant the
wisps of brownish academic fog and manages to communicate a deep and genuine
