Iceland in \\>e of?i ican. 91 The G.O.M.’s entertaining characteristic oddities are endless. His rapid change of front in political arguments, his ingenious reasons for thinking one way and voting another, in debating with Salisbury, were perfect. He smilingly counsels suavity and politeness, philosophical calm and the pleasant dignity of an experienced man of the world ; but like Mercutio, who blamed Benvolio for hot temper and straight- way lost his own, there is a smack of “peace, peace, where there is no peace ” about it. The latitude has never yet been reached where it is too cold or too hot for toddy at night. The steaming compound “pangs us fu’ o’ knowledge,” as Burns says, and never more so than when the Veteran relates some of his experiences. His local knowledge of Scotland is well known to us all, and sport, business, scenery, adventure, in many towns and hamlets, are woven into most interesting reminiscences in his hands. To hear the Commodore and the G.O. M. exchanging notes of the old days “on the road” is always a treat to us all, and full of comic episodes, too. We can easily imagine the pluck, pugnacity, and hard work they had to expend in gaining such varied business experience in their early days. The boys sit at the feet of these Gamaliels, and doubtless learn useful lessons; but especially are they interested in any recital of fishing or travelling experiences, and they, like Oliver Twist, often “ask for more.” In the evenings we wonder how the day has passed so quickly, and always fall into remembrances of similar days gone by. “ That was an awful night we had at Canna, Joe, when you robbed the lobster creels in a thunderstorm,” says the G.O.M. “Tell us about it,” cry the boys, and the Veteran unfolds the dreadful tale :—
