Icelan d in f\>e FRobi can. ii 7 Commodore, who peacefully smoked his cigar on the doorstep. A drink of foaming milk, fresh as the scent of mountain thyme, in such circumstances, is to be remembered ; though I fear it might be called “petty larceny” from some poor crofter. Soon the gig, flashing like gold in the setting sun, came wheeling round the point, and welcome too, as we felt tired and hungry. The night was a fitting end to a perfect day, and as we sped home over the placid loch, our solitary feeling was heightened by the cry of a lone wild-goose, far up above in the blue sky, flying with straight, outstretched neck to its feeding ground. In the gloamin’ we could only smoke in silence and watch the regular fall of the oars into the phosphorescent water; talking would have spoiled the effect. Just when we were changing our wet boots and waders in “ Mohican,” the boys returned from lythe-fishing, and a happy group of young and old crowded in to “tea and tult ” of the “tooziest” pattern. Laxford would either kill or cure the most confirmed dyspeptic, to judge by the performance at that swing table. After tea, the indefatigable Commodore, fired by the boys’ success at lythe-fishing, must be off in the dingy to have a try at them, and we watched him and Salisbury until their boat crept out of sight around the rocky headlands. We others smoked and lounged in slippers on the deck, and tried some rifle practice at a floating bottle ; ending by a soirde musicale in the after-saloon. We passed the evening as poor King James did before he was killed at Perth—“Yn redyng of Romans, yn syngyng and pypyng, yn harpyng & yn other honeste solaces of grete plesure & R
