We were all greatly impressed with the scene, and had much to tell the elders, when we got aboard, over the toddy and cigars. The talk drifted naturally, being Sunday, into a theological channel, comparing our Farish friends and their Lutheran priest with our own complicated ecclesiasticism, &c. “ Whusky and releegion gang thegither” (like freedom), and we had some good strong sense from the elders. The Miller supported the Episcopal system, the G.O.M. was general, and the Commodore listened, while the Historian tried to keep the conversation light by stories of “the cloth.” I remember how the late Dr. Service, the best preacher I ever heard, used to laugh at some of the tales that hit off the weakness of the pulpit. Here are two that tickled him :—A minister, much given to telling wishy-washy stories in his sermon, once ran dry in his prayer, and exclaimed, with solemnity, “ And now, O Lord, I will tell Thee a little anecdote!” Another “sky pilot,” as the sailors call a clergyman, who was a very argumentative wee man, astonished his flock by exclaiming, with considerable heat, in his prayer, “ Paradoxical as it may appear unto Thee, O Lord!” Surely clergymen are to be pitied, bound as they are by creed and articles. No wonder they are behind the age in what they preach. The Presbyteries keep them fixed to a date, and forbid them taking advantage of the research of modern times in anything that affects religious matters. Business men, common- sense, shrewd men, are often much ahead of the teaching they hear on Sundays from the pulpit, and think that the foundation of the teaching cannot be very solid when criticism or healthy opposition is forbidden. Better to invite the keen wind of scientific inquiry, as it will blow the
