Icelan d in \\)e PHoIji can. 45 would get up early in future. We were all on deck when we passed the Vestmannaevjar Isles, fantastic rocks with huts perched on them. It is on record that they conduct their postal delivery in a very curious way, as the following extract describes:— “The inhabitants of the small group of islands called Vestmannaevjar, situated to the south of Iceland, possess a very curious method of communication in their so-called ‘ bottle post.’ When it is * bottle weather ’—that is, when the wind blows from the south —and one of the islanders wishes to communicate with the mainland, he puts his letters into a well-corked bottle, and, to ensure their delivery, he inserts at the same time a plug of twist tobacco or a cigar. The wind speedily impels the bottle to the shore of the mother island, where people generally are on the look-out, who are willing to deliver the contents of the bottle in return for the enclosed remuneration.” This bottle-post affair, when related, caused a general movement below, where the G.O.M. said it was chilly. “A nipping and an eager air,” quoted the Historian. “ Exactly,” exclaimed the Miller; “so we’ll just have a nip now!” These Westman Islands are simply rugged rocks rising 9x6 feet sheer up from the sea and almost inaccessible. Only an Irishman could make a home on them, and true enough they get their name from “that same,” for we find it recorded that in the year 875 a Norwegian pirate landed on the coast of Ireland, harried the cottars, and lugged off about fifty of all ages and sexes into slavery. He could not govern them any better than we can now, for they rose on their captors, threw them overboard, and landed on the first land they came to. Perhaps their natural love of a scrimmage, or of rebelling “ agin the Government,” incited them to smash the pirate, but the writer of the extract calls it the courage of despair. Anynow this is how the islands were named Westman. u
