After all this gossip over our cigars in the deck-house, the Host came aboard again; and, tea finished, we fell once more into our old habits. The chips were got out, and poker began. The Dude said to Remus, “Ain’t Uncle John a daisy? He says he can’t afford to play with us, and we must go to the after-saloon and make a poker club of our own.” At this junior club the bluffing ran higher, but among the elders a better and quieter game was played. Then a few hands at whist until the attentive Andrew said, “Hot water on the table, sir,” and we descended. Some reminiscences of Bohemian evenings in the Savage Club and the “Cronies,” with tales of actors and stage life, passed round, and then on deck to smoke our last cigar. We had an appropriate song hummed by one of the party, beginning— “ I’ve seen the land of all I love Fade in the distance dim, I’ve watched above the blighted heart Where once proud hope hath been; But I’ve known a deeper sorrow— A heartbreak sadder far, When off the blue Canary Isles I smoked my last cigar!” In the calm night air we could hear the ripple of fish round the yacht, and, on looking over, we saw hundreds of saith and lythe leaping in the moonlight.
