Iceland in tb® “mob ican. 31 times. We heard that a Danish war vessel was hourly expected from Iceland. On Sunday night we went to the “ Farish Dance.” The elders waited aboard; but they missed a very curious sight, which can only be seen in Faroe. We found our way to a big room over the lager-beer shop, and it was crowded with quiet, well-behaved men and women. There was no musical instrument; they only wailed and chanted in a curious minor key. Sometimes one would sing, and then all the others would chorus ; sometimes all sung together. The light was dim, only two small oil-lamps. The dance was always the same, and never ended, as they all took hands, and went round and round in a fanciful “jinga ring,” keeping time with shuffling feet to the songs they moaned or chanted. Sometimes they got much excited, putting on the.pace and twisting in and out, stamping with their wooden shoes in unison, and making a most alarming row. An intelligent native, who spoke English, told us they were reciting stories (or sagas) of old Norse kings and heroes, and only in Faroe was this custom kept up; nowhere else could we see this sight. The visit of the “Mohican,” and the departure of boats for the Iceland fisheries, made the function unusually important. We all “feared to tread” a measure, but Remus “ rushed in ” and joined the dance between two Faroe fair ones ; but he couldn’t get the hang of the thing, and had to return with more kicks than compliments. We asked leave to provide beer for the party, which offer was gravely accepted, so 37 quarts lager were produced. There must have been quite 80 people in the room when we left. Doubtless, after we went off, the fun would get less restrained, and the sagas more vigorously recited. In the dim light they looked like F*
